City Council Elections

The City Council consists of five members elected at-large on a nonpartisan basis. Elections are held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even-numbered years and are consolidated with the General Election administered by Contra Costa County.

Council members serve staggered, four-year terms. There are no term limits and Councilmembers serve the entire community.

Selection of Mayor and Vice Mayor

The Mayor is selected from the membership of the City Council at the first regular meeting in December following the receipt of the election results from the County in an election year. The Mayor presides at the City Council meetings and is recognized as the official head of the city government for ceremonial purposes.

The Vice Mayor is also chosen at that time and acts in the absence of the Mayor.
